(Hartford, OH)…With the western Pa./eastern Ohio region down to just two weekly speedways running Big-Block Modifieds, Sharon Speedway has worked hard in recent years to preserve the longstanding division that has been part of the weekly program since going back to dirt in 1981. Sharon joined with Lernerville Speedway under the DIRTcar sanction in 2012 and for the second straight year offered the separate “Drive to be a Champion” program in memory of Lou Blaney. The result has been increased car counts over the past two seasons.

In the inaugural 2012 season, Rex King topped Dave Murdick and Kevin Bolland to win the $ 1,010 “Drive to be a Champion” prize as those three racers shared $ 1,830. In 2013, thanks to additional sponsors (see list below), the pot grew to $ 2,300! The top 10 drivers will now share in the point fund that will be distributed during the 2013 Awards Banquet & Dinner at Yankee Lake (OH) Ballroom on Saturday, February 1. The program again used drivers’ best 10 finishes during 2013 with the addition of 10 bonus points for competing in the August 20 “Lou Blaney Memorial”.

For the second straight year a King earned the “Drive to be a Champion” title. Behind a career high five victories, Rex King, Jr. of Bristolville, Ohio took the $ 1,010 top honors in the KMB, Inc.-owned, Jim Brown Seed Sales/Bristol Disposal/Cedar Steel/Professional Heating & Cooling/Reese Services/King Sanitary Service-sponsored #165.

Jim Weller, Jr., who had a phenomenal season winning three features and recording five runner-up finishes that propelled him to the Governor Insurance Agency track championship, finished second in the program and will receive $ 310. The elder Rex King, who won 2012 the “Drive to be a Champion” program, dropped to third place this past season for $ 210.

The following drivers finished fourth through tenth in the program and will receive an extra $ 110: Dave Murdick, Ricky Richner, Jeremiah Shingledecker, Eric Gabany, Rob Kristyak, Jimmy Weller III, and Bob Warren.

The 2013 “Drive to be a Champion” sponsors included Colonial Metals (Bill Thomas), New Breed (Jerry Morell), Wedge Motorsports (Dave Willoughby), DB Racing (Dave Blaney), Carpenter’s Towing (Rudy Carpenter), Tom Keir Family, Bob Morell, Dale Blaney, and Ryan Blaney Motorsports.

FINAL 2013 “Drive to be a Champion” DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Top 10 Points: 1. REX KING, JR. (165) 296 2. Jim Weller, Jr. (31) 282 3. Rex King (65) 276 4 Dave Murdick (61) 266 5. The event will begin at 11 a.m. and again be presented by JohnnyK’s Powersports of Niles, Ohio. All access admission is just $ 5!

The inaugural event held in 2011 saw a packed grandstands of eager fans brave bitter cold temperatures with the wind chill well below zero and watched over 100 snowmobile competitors put on a quite a show. In 2012, it took three tries before a last minute snowstorm allowed the event to take place that featured nine different winners in 11 classes. No snow forced the event to be cancelled three times in 2013.

The following snowmobile classes will be in action in both independent front suspension and leaf: 400cc and under, 401-500 cc, 501-600cc, 601-700cc, 701-800cc, 801cc+ & mods, along with the vintage sleds. For the first time ever, this year’s event has been expanded to include ATVs and Side-by-Sides! The classes of competition for the latter will be broke down by utility and sport and cc.

Helmets are required, while suits, gloves, chest protectors & tethers are highly recommended. Sled and/or rider must be visibly numbered! Each class will run heats and a feature. Drivers will be permitted a few warm-up laps. There will be no cash prizes as winners will receive trophies only. Hay bales will be setup around the 3/8-mile track.

Registration is now $ 30. Registration forms are available at www.sharonspeedway.com/drivers/registration. Gates will open at 9 with racing at 11 a.m.

Hovis Auto & Truck Supply to present DIRTcar Big-Block Mods in 2014 & also nightly pit pass giveaways

By Mike Leone

February 12, 2013

(Hartford, OH)…Sharon Speedway is proud to announce Hovis Auto & Truck Supply will be the 2014 divisional sponsor of the DIRTcar Big-Block Modified division. Hovis has been a longtime sponsor of the speedway including victory lane and will now step-up and present the Speedway’s headlining division for the new year. Also, as part of the 85th anniversary celebration, Hovis will also giveaway six pit passes each night!

After an open practice and Enduro on Saturday, March 22, the first official green flag of the season will take place on Saturday, April 19 led by the Hovis Auto & Truck Supply DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds along with the Barris Supply RUSH Late Models, Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds, Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars, HTMA/Precise Racing Products Econo Mods, and the Deforest Used Parts Mini Stocks.

The Hovis Auto & Truck Supply DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds will be on the schedule 23 times in 2014 highlighted by the July 30 $ 2,000 to-win “Lou Blaney Memorial” and the September 13 “Russ King Memorial” for the BRP Tour. Jim Weller, Jr. is set to defend his title in search of his fourth career championship. Rex King, Jr., who finished runner-up and won the Lou Blaney “Drive to be a Champion” title, will look to earn his first ever track championship.

The second part of Hovis’ program is the six nightly pit pass giveaways. At each event, one fan, one DIRTcar Big-Block Modified driver, and one driver in one of the other divisions will each win a pair of pit passes for the following week’s event! A program will be announced to determine the nightly DIRTcar Big-Block Modified winner of the pit passes. The night’s other division giveaway will rotate weekly generally for the division that races first in the program and will be by a drawing of a feature finishing position. The fan giveaway will simply be a drawing from the rain checks.

“I’m real excited about Hovis increasing their involvement at the speedway and this new pit pass giveaway program,” stated GM Dave Willoughby. “Cliff Hovis has been a longtime supporter of auto racing and has been a fan of the Big-Block Modifieds for years. This is a great way for him to get his name out in a major way on a weekly basis and to give back to the sport that he truly loves.”

Hovis Auto & Truck Wrecking was first opened as a family business in 1952. By 1969 Hovis had grown to include new parts sales, and Hovis Auto & Truck Supply was formed.
